Your time is limited, so dont waste it living someone elsers life.(Steve Jobs). Life has a special meaning because it was given to us by God. However, individuals have a habit of forgetting to be grateful and thankful of their own. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Your time is limited" essay for you Create order In the speech of Steve Jobs, it explains how people only got one chance at life, so they have to enjoy it now while they can. Also, individuals need to value their life more. In Steve Jobs quote, Stay hungry. Stay foolish., it has connections towards other authorrs articles. The theme is to keep moving forward at life no matter what. Amanda Ripley, Roger Ebert, and Steve Jobs all have connections to Stay hungry. Stay foolish. because they all stood hungry and achieved at life and they stood foolish by taking life changing risks. Amanda Ripley gave the same meaning as Steve Jobs did on cherishing life. She explains how you can not trade life for anything because it is so much valuable: to place as much of a value on that lost loved one as they can. So here is where they seek to amplify the value on that lost loved one as they can. They seek to amplify the value of that memory. (Ripley). What this quote says is that life is too valuable for it to be lost. She states that individuals should be wanting more for than what they lost. Ripley also argues that all life is equal: She says, (all lives are equal (Ripley). This quote is saying that equality should be in all lives of humanity. Another connection is Roger Ebert who also was diagnosed with cancer. The advice in his article is to never give up. Cancer changed Ebertrs perspective on life and it made him to cherish his own life. Also, he did not give up from this brutal disease. Ebert is still himself: He says, Itrs saving me. When I am writing my problems become invisible and I am the same person I always was. All is well. I am the same person I was always. (Ebert). This quote is saying that Ebert is not afraid of death because he did everything and acomplished so much in life. Roger Ebert taught people when something does not go in our way in life, never give up. Steve Jobs was a man who changed his perspective on life. Jobs had his own company, Apple. He, in fact, was the creator of Apple. However, he was later kicked and replaced out of his own company, but Jobs is did not let this stop him from getting his company back. As he was planning to get his job back, Jobs was diagnosed with cancer. He stated his cancer was the best thing that ever happened to him because it drove him to not give up and try new and better things. This later resulted in getting his job back as director of Apple: He says Remembering that Ill be dead soon is the most important tool Ive ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life (Jobs). This quote shows that Jobs kept moving forward even though he was diagnosed with cancer. Cancer was his drive to keep trying new things in which resulted in getting his job back. A call to action is to not let anyone nor anything have a bad impact on your life. The secret for a good life is to keep on cherishing life, to not give up, and to keep moving forward. These advice are what the authors and Steve Jobs gave individuals. In conclusion, Steve Jobs quote, Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. has connections with Roger Ebert, Amanda Ripley, and not other than Steve Jobs himself. Works Cited Jobs, Steve. Youve Got to Find What You Love. Commercialization of college sport Essay Example For Students

Commercialization of college sport Essay Im going to have to let you go, says coach Tim Koth to another former player as he adds another notch to his belt. Its nothing personal, I like you, he says, but I have to look at this as a business. Is that what it is? I always looked at sport as an outlet, or even an opportunity; but sport is a business, that has become the cruel reality of modern day sport. This paper will discuss various aspects and show different examples of some ways in which this fact is apparent. I am a unit, specifically, a mere employee within a corporation earning just around four thousand dollars per year. Quincy University (as well as other universities) represents the corporation; it is because of Quincy University that I will never see my four thousand dollars per year. The volleyball team, and other teams belonging to the corporation, are the manufacturersthe moneymakers. So when I, or any other employee, is not working out efficiently, then the boss needs to let me go. As much as they (meaning, the coaches) might say that they care for the individual, their care is only skin deep. Every individual on a team is expendable, and every individual, at one point or another, will be replaced. Coaches will typically form relationships with their players on an authoritative level. The coaches will normally develop a method in which they control nearly every aspect of the players life (Sage 149). It can be anything from eating habits, extra curricular activities, and training for the associated sport, to such things as dating behaviors and other social characteristics of the normal life of a college studentits a trap. This is the situation: a high school student with an exceptional athletic background and satisfying grades is recruited to a division one school with a healthy scholarship to play basketball. He accepts the offer and signs his National Letter of Intent which declares that if the student wishes to play for another institution he must first take a full year off from playing his designated sport. In that effect, the student athlete is bound to this institution; however, the institution is not bound to the athlete (Eitzen 111). The student has no qualms about signing this piece of paper; he feels that this is just a small price to pay in the way of higher education. After the first year of college, however, the student finds that he is incapable of competing at such a high level, and what once was a way to pay for the greater part of his education has become his downfall. His contract is non-renewable, non-negotiable; the once caring coaching staff has let him go. Since signing his lette r of intent, he has no chance at playing basketball for even a division two or three school, and is left with no way to pay for his educationits a trap. Colleges should, in the future, offer two to four year scholarships to exemplify their commitment to athletes as student representatives (Eitzen 118). In college, the athlete considers himself or herself to be an elite, which is true based on a table of progression within the National Federation of State High School Associations data, stating that only five percent of all high school athletes are able to carry their athletic career into a collegiate level (Sage 52). This is one example of the business aspect of sport. If this were not true, then anyone that wanted to play in a particular sport, could. College sport has grown from simple intramural and recreational facets of life to large-scale commercial entertainment. We have come to an era in which sports are not only a part of our everyday life, but they almost control us. The topic arises in nearly every conversation, example: how bout them Bears?! The mention of a sporting team is a means of casual conversation, an icebreaker, and even has certain politics involved as well. Then you have your schools, the corporations, which have come to rely on sports as a means of attracting more students and other gratuities (i.e. major endorsements and other various sponsorships). One can be sure that nobody goes to Ohio State because of its outstanding fine arts division. Ohio State is first known as a competitive football producer, it is realized secondly as an educational institution. Ohio State, because of its past successes, is enthusiastically endorsed by the Nike Corporation and also has an enrollment of well over thirty thousand students. There is a buzz that resonates in the air and the minds of those in Buckeye Land, and the state-of-the-art faci lities are directly related to this impact. .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 , .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 .postImageUrl , .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 , .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1:hover , .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1:visited , .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1:active { border:0!important; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1:active , .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1 .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ued85bba68511cad5fd943643554d35d1:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Strong continental empire EssayAnother, yet crueler, aspect of college sport as a business is an example that was made public by the University of Central Florida football program in 1997. With Heisman Trophy candidate Dante Culpepper as one of the teams greater successes, the coach of the UCF Knights accepted a division 1 schedule, which included powerhouse teams such as Nebraska and Georgia State for approximately one million dollars in return. The coach commented by saying that he does not mind getting crushed mentally and physically, and that one million dollars will more than satisfy any medical needs. As it was, UCF was nearly obliterated by Nebraska physically, the players being treated merely as the aforementioned expendable units. Is it not disgusting that universities are becoming so commercialized that student seating is often raffled off in a lottery (Eitzen 106)? Participating, whether playing or spectating, in sports was originally meant for the interest and entertainment of the students. Would it not be more ideal to have a lottery for the community outside of the university? It is, after all, the university that created the community. These are but a few examples that have opened my eyes to college sport in the business perspective. I feel somewhat guilty in that I am a participant, and will continue to participate, in college sports even after searching into the background for these facts. Although I do not foresee much, if any, change in the future of sport, I will be ever more wary when it comes time for my blood (my children) to enter into the commercialized world of higher education. Not only is collegiate sport concerned with business, but its leaders go to great lengths to conceal this fact (Sage 191). Bibliography:

The Built Environment And Tourism Tourism Essay Essay Example

The Built Environment And Tourism Tourism Essay Essay Tourism has been one of the economic success narratives of the last 40 old ages. It has grown into a major constituent of the universe economic system and one of the most extremely developed and dynamic industries with an of import part to incomes and employment. Tourism has been quickly turning sector and a wide-sweeping socioeconomic phenomenon with wide economic, societal, cultural and environmental effects. It is likely that touristry will go on to rule the international scene for many old ages to come. ( Sharma, 2011 ) The environment is possibly one of the most important subscribers to the popularity and attraction of a finish. Sceneries, pleasant climes and alone landscape characteristics have an imperative influence in touristry development and the spacial distribution of tourer motions. Apart from environment, the other of import tourer puller is civilization in all its diverseness across continents. Cultural touristry has long existed, but recent demographic, societal, and cultural alterations in the chief beginning states have led to an increasing figure of new niche markets in finish states, including culture-oriented vacations. ( UNEP, WTO, 2005 ) . Learning about the brunt of touristry has led many tourers to seek more painstaking vacations. These incorporate assorted signifiers of sustainable touristry such as: nature-based touristry , ecotourism and cultural touristry . The major jobs arise because the environment ( at least in the short term ) is a nothing priced public good and as with any zero-priced good, is capable to extra demand and over-utilization. This over-utilization of the natural resources and development of cultural heritage particularly during the peak periods of tourer activity every bit good as frequently sick planned touristry development, have provided a figure of illustrations where touristry is in struggle with the environment ( Coccossis, Parpairis, 1995 ) . Not merely that, a s a consequence of environmental consciousness, a great figure of alternate signifiers of touristry been developed in the last decennary. Sustainable Tourism promotes limited-scale, low-impact, community-based activities. It may be defined as touristry that gives emphasis to the contact and apprehension between the hosts and the tourer, every bit good as the milieus ( Smith A ; Eadington, 1992 ) or as touristry consistent with the natural, societal and community values and that allows a constructive relationship among locals and tourers . ( Wearing A ; Neil, 1999 ) . Sustainable environment requires sustainable design. Architecture and design can continue the memorable and old memorials while it can besides make new and attractive qualities in which people can utilize and bask. Architecture has the endowment of specifying infinites and therefore has a powerful influence on the human behavior and apprehension and this is precisely what is ever taken into history in sustainability, maximising economic benefit and continuing the ecosystem. But what should be the attack to this design to accomplish all ends of sustainable touristry or instead what are the tools and rules of architecture that need to be adopted to encompass sustainable touristry demand to be developed. Thus the inquiry to be answered is: What should be the architectural attack for sustainable touristry? Specifying Sustainable Tourism Sustainable touristry is frequently considered to be a particular sort of touristry that entreaties to a peculiar market niche that is sensitive to environmental and societal impacts. This is a narrow position as sustainable touristry is much more than a discreet or particular signifier of touristry. The term sustainable touristry refers to a primary aim to do all touristry more sustainable. It is a continual procedure of betterment, one which applies every bit to touristry in metropoliss, resorts, rural and coastal countries, hills and protected countries. It should be thought of as a division of touristry, non a type of touristry. Sustainable touristry is based on the three pillars of sustainability ( economic, societal and environmental ) and is merely defined by the World Tourism Organization as: Tourism that takes full history of its current and future economic, societal, and environmental impacts, turn toing the demands of visitants, the industry, the environment and host com munities. ( WTO, 2005 ) , Sustainability is a procedure and non an terminal province. The built environment and Tourism Tourism has an inauspicious consequence on built environment. It could be on architectural facade, alteration of landuse, overburdening of substructure etc. Large scale building of tourer installations and other substructure tends to alter the land usage of an country and besides upset the natural ecological harmoniousness of a finish. Besides touristry brings alterations to the common engineering and sometimes the traditional buildings merely vanish giving manner to modern building which is most of the clip non following and rules of sustainability. Alternatively they create injury to the finish, finally losing the character, being environmentally upseting and non suited to the demands apart from commercial facet. Some of the other impacts of touristry on built environment and architecture of a topographic point are: over-intensive urbanisation, illegal buildings, pollution, negative aesthetic alterations, debasement of quality etc. Need Designation Tourism now accounts for 10 % of the universe s economic activity but at the same clip it has major impacts on the natural and reinforced environments and every bit good as on well being and civilizations of host population. Ecological, societal and economic sustainability are intertwined. Tourism and architecture may be connected to the benefit of the two and finally to the benefit of the people. There has been merely a really small research on the function of architecture and the attack that should be followed when aiming sustainable touristry. Since edifice activities like building of hotels, invitee houses, tourer Centres, commercial centres etc rule the development of touristry at any topographic point, there is a demand to develop an attack and policy on architectural developments as portion of sustainable touristry. This job is of cardinal importance as it has led to the absence of an equal theoretical foundation for understanding the kineticss of alternate touristry and the societal activities it involves and reacting to it consequently. Sustainable design and planning do non endanger the economical benefits that a healthy touristry industry can convey ; on the contrary, they can heighten local distinctive features and do usage of traditional cognition and expertness. Where sustainable methods and stuffs are employed, edifices can be both ecologically and economically profitable, thanks to their lower building and life rhythm costs. This thesis will be a little attempt in the same way. Scope Sustainability does non necessitate a lessened quality of life, but it does necessitate a alteration in mentality and values toward a less consumptive life style. These alterations must encompass overall mutuality, ecological stewardship, societal duty and economic feasibleness. Assorted authorities organic structures, international organisations and conventions have stated the importance of touristry and its sustainability. Many states every bit good wish to or hold already initiated the chase to policies of sustainable touristry . In fact one of the most of import issues in sustainable development of touristry resources is the consideration and enlargement of design and building criterions in order to make an optimal usage of energy, H2O and land resources. The range of the survey will be to understand sustainable touristry and its signifiers maintaining in head the delicate finishs specially, be it in footings of their ecosystem, cultural heritage or economic stableness and province rules that should regulate the architectural design and planning of the touristry substructure maintaining in head sustainability as defined above. To put down the architectural moralss in planning and designing of tourer demands like hotels, invitee houses, activity Centres etc suited to the ecosystem, society and economic system. The survey will concentrate on the delicate finishs since there is more need at that place but the applications will be in general universal. The range of research is in guidelines published by international organic structures maintaining in head Indian finishs. Restrictions The instance surveies where sustainable touristry developments have been implemented will non be accessible physically and the research will hold to depend on secondary beginnings of informations. The primary instance survey will be covering a finish which is delicate ecologically, culturally and economically. It might non be possible to do multiple visits and at the same clip while making the study the deficiency of academic cognition sing the topic amongst hosts could take it adrift. None of the tourer finishs in India has adopted sustainable touristry as a whole. Few resorts, vicinities etc have adopted sustainability within them. Sustainable touristry is a comparatively new term ; the research on it will be limited to informations over the past 3o old ages merely. Since the range has to be limited the research will concentrate peculiarly on function of architecture in sustainable touristry and non other agencies of accomplishing it. When explicating the study questionnaire, the deficiency of cognition about sustainable touristry might take to indirect framing of inquiries. Besides people will hold to be relied upon for being honest which might non be the instance for all. 1.7 Mentions and Bibliography Mentions Khaksar, A. , Tahmouri, A. , Hoseinrazavi, S. , 2001, The Reciprocal Effects Of Architecture And Tourism: The Sustainability Approach, Allameh Tabatabai University, Tehran, Iran Sharma, K. , 2011, Sustainable Tourism Development Through Sustainable Architecture: A Projected Case Study of Cox s Bazaar, Bangladesh. MD Programs in the US

Complete List BA/MD and BS/MD Programs in the US SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Do you dream of becoming a doctor? If you’re set on going to medical school, then a combined BS/MD or BA/MD program might be for you. The majority of thesecombined programs allow motivated high school students to go right from undergraduate to medical school without having to go through another application process. While there aren’t a ton of spots available in combined programs, there are schools throughout the country that offer them. Before we look at those, however, let’s review what BA/MD and BS/MD programs entail, as well as the pros and cons for high school and young undergraduate applicants. What Are Combined BA/MD and BS/MD Programs? Combined programs allow students to earn a bachelor’s degree- either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS)- and then proceed directly into a medical program for a Doctor of Medicine (MD). Since students are already accepted to medical school, they can forgo the typical medical school admissions process near the end of undergrad. Instead of applying separately to medical school, students just go through one major admissions process at the end of high school (or, occasionally, a condensed application process early in college). Programs that askstudents to apply after first getting admitted to the collegeare typically referred to as early assurance programs. Students in combined programs commit to a specific college and medical school or network of schools. This medical school is usually part of the same institution or a partner school in the same region or college network. For instance, the SUNY and University of Texas systems, along with the Eastern Virginia network, offer students various choices of medical schools among their connected or partner colleges. On the other hand, students in Boston University’s combined program would have to attend BU for both undergraduate and medical school. While combined programs offer students early assurance, some of them still require applicants to take and do well on the MCAT. Students must also maintain a certain GPA as they work their way through required college classes. Manyoffers are conditional on the student's undergraduate and testing performance. Most combined programs are the same length as non-combined ones: eight years. In other words, most students in direct medical programs will still go to college for four years and then to medical school for four years. Afew programs offer accelerated programsbycompressing the amount of time spent as an undergraduate; these may be seven or even just six years in length. For example, Drexel University College of Medicine offers both an eight-year combined program and a seven-year combined program. It has eight-year BA/MD and BS/MD programs for students majoring in biomedical engineering or engineering. It also offers a fast-tracked seven-year BA/BS/MD program for students majoring in biological sciences, chemistry, psychology, or engineering. Most schoolshave either an eight-year or accelerated program, while others like Drexel offer both choices depending on your field of study as an undergraduate. Before taking a closer look at accelerated programs, let’s go over some of the pros and cons of combined medical programs for students. Pro: you'll get to impress people by adding MD after your name whenever you sign it. Con: you might not be able to watch shows like Grey's Anatomy anymore because of all their medical inaccuracies. Combined BA/MD and BS/MD Programs: Pros and Cons Now that we've covered what exactly combined medical programs are, it's time to take a look at the pros and cons of entering one. Pros of a Combined Medical Program Applying to medical school is a competitive and stressful process, so the major pro of getting into a combined program is that you won’t have to go through all that application stress! Rather, you’ll be able to rest easy and focus on your academics, knowingyou’ve already been accepted. What's more, a combined program allows you to commit fully to your goals, and pursue medicine in your academic and professional path. You’ll be focused on medicine throughout your education and graduate with an MD. Not only will you have a steadyeducational and career path, but you can also benefit from the stability of studying at one school or in one system of schools. Through a combined program, you’ll get deeply immersed in a community and can get to know your professors and facilities well during your studies. Finally, in addition to offering students a stable and challenging program in their chosen fields, many combined programs offer scholarship money. Since they tend to be extremely selective, direct medical programs often offer financial aid to high-achieving students who get in. Getting this money can greatly assist you in achieving your educational goals. Of course, there are somedownsides to think aboutforcombined medical programs. Let’s consider some of the cons of committing to a six- to eight-year program. Cons of a Combined Medical Program First, there's time: most combined programs involve eight years of intensive study. Although these programs do eliminate the hurdle of a stressful med school application process, they also demand a huge commitment from high school students. Your goals could very well shift as you grow and have new experiences in college. Combined programs call for a great deal of dedication and commitment from young students whose aimsmight change as they grow older. Of course, dropping out of the program is always an option if your goals change. If you do drop out but later change your mind and decide to reapply to med school, you might end up stuck at a school that wasn’t your first choice or find yourself lacking required courses. On the flip side, if you switch your major from pre-med to something else, you might have to add more semesters as an undergrad. As you can see, though possible, giving up such a selective program you worked hard to get into would almost certainly be a stressful and nerve-wracking ordeal in itself! Another potential con of some combined programs is the commitment to the same location for eight years. Some students might be ready to experience a new city after undergrad, but those in combined programs will likely have to stick around for another four years. Though some combined programs involve relocating to a partner school, most are at the same university. Just as combined programs limit your choices in terms of medical schools and location, they also typically don’t offer much flexibility in curriculum. While your fellow students might discover different fields or participate in study abroad programs, your own course schedule might not allow for as much exploration. This kind of intensive, structured program might be a pro for some students and a con for others. Just be aware that combined programs call for a big commitment at a young age, and carefully consider whether you’re readyto make that leap. Before we check out the full list of schools offering combined medical programs, let’s take a moment to go over accelerated programs and how they’re unique. Acceleratedprograms take an already intense track of study and send it into hyperspeed. What Are Accelerated BA/MD and BS/MD Programs? An accelerated program is a type of combined medical program that's shorter than the typical eight years. Most of these programs are seven, but a few are as short as six years. Usually, the undergraduate portion, rather than the medical school portion, is shortened. These programs might combine two required classes into one, or have students attend year-round by taking intensive courses throughout the summer. Aswith combined programs, students will move directly from undergrad into a medical school program to which they’ve already been accepted- they might just be a little younger than their peers. Accelerated BA/MD and BS/MD Programs: Pros and Cons In addition to the considerations discussed above, what are some of the pros and cons specific to accelerated combined medical programs? Pros of an Accelerated Program As a combined program, an accelerated program shares all the pros discussed above, such as the opportunity to get early acceptance to medical school and to commit to a field of study you’re passionate about. Furthermore, the shorter time means you can enter medical school and earn your MD even faster, giving you a leap ahead into your profession by a year or more. Because these programs are shorter, they might also have a lower cost than the traditional eight-year path. Note that accelerated programs are by no means easier than non-acceleratedones; in fact, they’re usually even more challenging because they compress the same material and requirements into a shorter amount of time. If you’re a high-achieving, motivated student, an accelerated medical program may be just the kind of challenging and intensive experience you’re looking for. Cons of an Accelerated Program The accelerated nature of these programs means that they demand even more of a commitment from applicants, who are often young high school students. These fast-paced programs are a huge challenge and offer even less flexibilitythan the regular eight-year combined programs. If you commit to an accelerated program, not only do you have to be absolutely sure about your decision to earn your MD in a shortened period of time, but you also have to be prepared to miss out on some normal undergraduate experiences. As someone studying on the fast track, you won’t have as much time to explore, socialize, or perhapsstudy abroad. Such experiences as these can be enriching parts of college, so think deeply about whether you’re ready to limit them. Additionally, accelerated programs often require students to study year-round, limiting the potential for summer jobs, travel, and/or internships. These programs can be grueling, packing already tough classes like Organic Chemistry I and II into one semester. The main risk here is that the stress could turn you away from a path you would've otherwise enjoyed had you instead taken the slower route. Finally, because the program is shorter than others, you need to do your research to make sure it’s high quality. Whether you’re committing to a combined or accelerated program, it's important to do extensive research to ensure you’re committing the next six to eight years of your life to the best program for you. Choose a medical school already! Your cat is tired of playing patient. Combined BS/MD and BA/MD Programs: The Full List Below is our most updated list of combined BS/MD and BA/MD programs in the US. Germany's Holocaust Memorial Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Germany's Holocaust Memorial - Assignment Example Eisenman designed it in a way that each stone slab is unique, positioned on uneven ground at varying heights. Some are taller than an average person while some are just as high as the ankles. Visitors are encouraged to wander through the paths and they can enter the monument on all four sides. Eisenman designed the monument to create a sense of instability, and the maze of stones tends to disorient some visitors. However, the designer of the monument hoped that the memorial will become a natural part of the city, and offer a respite for its citizens after a busy day. At the base of the monument is a subterranean Information Center, where visitors can find more information about the monument’s design and construction. It also features stories of several individuals and families who faced persecution of the Nazis during the war. The Information Center is open day and night. The monument serves as a silent reminder of a past that most people would want to forget. May it also serv e as a symbol of hope for the future generations. May each stone slab remind us all that no one has the right to take another man’s life for personal ambitions. May we all learn from our history, so that the acts of infamy committed by such unlawful men will never happen again.

Bleeding Kansas Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Bleeding Kansas - Assignment Example Doubtful people were imprisoned or driven out of town, books majoring on the South were openly burned, and the whole area was in a condition of alarm. South Carolina planters wrote to Wise requesting to receive samples of the Pikes Brown had anticipated providing to slaves; they wanted greatly to know a little concerning this obscure enemy. Most of the Southerners were by now pushing for secession previous to October of 1859, but the raid was an example of cruelty toward the South, which gave a real justification for disunion. Even though, many Northerners detested abolitionism, the Southern dread of mounting antislavery feeling was increased considerably by the Harpers Ferry raid (Tony 67). Wise got letters warning him of the "villainy of Northern abolitionists," and asking him to "bring them all to trial. . . ." Abolitionists triggered this fire, too, as they said "All of us at the North have sympathy with the sacrifice of Harpers

Personal Identity - Philosophy Essay Example for Free

Personal Identity Philosophy Essay It is easy to see oneself as the same person we were ten, twenty, or fifty years ago. We can define identity through our physical presence, life experiences, memories, and mental awareness of self. One can testify our persistence as a person through our existence as a person. But what makes us the same person? In this paper, I will argue for the â€Å"simple† view of the persistence of identity – that it is impossible to determine what single thing that makes us the same person over time. I will support my claim with the refutation of the main complex view claims of the body, brain and psychological continuity criterion. Entrenched in the â€Å"simple† view is the idea that personal identity, and the persistence of personal identity, cannot be measured through philosophical discourse or scientific investigation. There are a number of opposing arguments, known as complex theories of personal identity. In each of these arguments, the central claim is that either the body, the brain, or the psychological continuity of an individual determines how they persist as the same person (Garrett, 1998, p 52). To call them complex is a misnomer – for each is far too narrow to properly define and explain personal identity. Complex argument 1– Psychological continuity John Locke defines a person as a ‘thinking, intelligent being, that has reason and reflection and can consider itself as itself, the same thinking thing, in different times and places’ (Locke, 1689, p 1-6). This statement suggests that, in order to persist as the same person, we must have a mental consciousness which persists through time. We can say that a person is psychologically continuous if they have a mental state that is descendent from their previous mental states. For example, this theory states that a five-year-old will be the same person when they are a 25-year-old, because their mental state in later years is descendent from their earlier years. Counter argument By its very nature, the idea of psychological continuity is flawed. It is not uncommon for an individuals mental state to be changed so drastically that they could not truly be considered the same person. Several examples have been made by Waller: sufferers of cognitive impairments such as dementia, people who have gone through stressful or traumatic situations, and war eterans that are affected by post-traumatic stress disorder (Waller, 2011, p 198-210). In any of these cases, it would be difficult to argue that the individual has a continuous mental state – more accurate would be to describe them as a â€Å"snap† or â€Å"break† that, effectively, creates a new person. The only conclusion is that these individuals do not persist, as their psychological states become radically different from their previous psychological states. Complex argument 2 – Persistence of the body Another expression of the complex view is the body criterion. Put simply, a person is said to persist if they exist in the same physical body over time. In this case, the previously mentioned dementia or PTSD sufferers would be considered the same people, as their physical body has continued. The theory suggests a â€Å"brute physical relation† between body and identity (Korfmacher, 2006). Without regard for mental state, an individual is considered to have a persistent personal identity as long as their body survives. Counter argument This theory lends itself easily to thought experiments, and they quickly expose some problems. If individual A receives an organ donation from individual B, can it be said that individual A has taken some of Bs identity? Surely not. It would be absurd to suggest that having the kidney or liver of another person would affect ones persistence as an individual. Similarly, if individual C had their body cloned, it would not make their clone the same person. There is much more to personal identity than can be defined by something so comparatively insignificant as the physical body. Complex argument 3 – Persistence of the brain The brain is the functional centre of the human body; the place where memories are stored, feelings are felt, and environmental signals are processed. It is unsurprising, therefore, that the brain is so often considered to be the â€Å"home† of personal identity. This theory is a staple of many science fiction texts – as a convention, the cognizant â€Å"brain in a jar† or brain transplant recipient is fairly common. Proponents of this â€Å"we are our brains† theory claim that, so long as the brain persists, so does the person. Counter argument This theory seems to refer to consciousness rather than the physicality of the brain, so it is important to make a clarification between the two. Julian Baggini suggests that we should view the relationship between consciousness and identity similarly to the relationship between a musical score and the paper it is written on (Baggini, 2005, pp. 112-114). In other words, the brain is simply a storage space for our memories, thoughts, and self-awareness. Should it not, therefore, be so that an individual could simply persist as a brain in a jar, provided they could be sustained in that state? If the entirety of personal identity is stored in the brain, there must be no need for the rest of the body beyond keeping the brain alive. Such a theory could not possibly be true – life experiences and interactions with the world are such an intrinsic part of identity that we could not persist without them. The theory that consciousness plays a significant role in the persistence of personal identity is appealing, but it can not be said that the brain alone could sustain consciousness. Conclusion  To call the simple view of the persistence of personal identity â€Å"simple† is almost deceptive; deep consideration on the subject quickly turns towards the complex. It is easy to grasp at the categories of body, brain, and mental state, but it would be wrong to say that the persistence of any of those equates to the persistence of an individual. Personal identity is something so much harder to define, and it is harder still to find definitive measures of its continuation. Personal identity is evasive, and fleeting; it is intangible, ever-changing. Its persistence is so much more than can be determined.

Renaissance and Reformation Essay -- Changes, Influence, Origin

The European Renaissance was characterized by advancements and new developments in literature, science, religion, politics, and most importantly artwork. It proved to be a reappearance of learning based on classical sources. The renaissance was not as widespread as one would think. Essentially it is described as a time of cultural movements rather than technological advancements. Its time period ranged roughly from the 14th century to the 17th century. There is debate as to how far the movement stretched and exactly how many areas were influenced by the renaissance era. The European Renaissance is thought to have originated in Florence, Italy in the 14th century, and occurred after the Black Death. The Black Death was a disease which affected all of Europe. It caused about a third of the population of Europe to die out. The survivors were devastated at the loss of their loved ones, but they found that they were better off financially and socially, making their way up the social ladder. Specifically in Italy, there was greater social mobility. The upward mobility of individuals around this time allowed them to patronize early artists and rebuild libraries. Some areas were seeing more competitively between workers and their bosses, but the 'new' wealth was spent to display items to reinforce prestige. This allowed citizens to patronise the Renaissance artists. Merchants in regions like Italy saw increases in their wealth from trading, using the same trade routes in which the Black Death was spread. The trade income was further developing by Renaissance developments in commerce, causing the merchants to have more wealth to patronise with. The Renaissance brought on new conceptions of life and ... ...such as Italy and Germany. Italy and Germany's economy went bankrupt, causing an increase of famine and disease to spread throughout the populace. The main effect the Reformation had on Europe was the religious thinkings. The Churches now taught the importance of the individual conscience and gained new purity and strength through counter Reformation. The counter Reformation was created by the Catholic Churches as an answer to the Protestant Reformation. Both the Renaissance and the Reformation helped shape all countries today. The Renaissance helped people focus more about the individual person rather than the social class in which they were born. The Reformation was a building block to more forms of Christianity that are still taught today, such as Protestantism. If we had not had either of them, our religion, politic, and even our writing would be different.

The Metamorphosis by F. Kafka

Franz Kafka belongs to those writers of the twentieth century whose fiction express sorrow over the fracturing of human community. Though Kafka remains exceptional in that he enjoyed no public recognition during his lifetime, his world-fame came to him only after his death. His well-developed, modernist parables often do not have any fixed meaning, yet they reflect the insecurities of an age when faith in old-established beliefs has crumbled. Kafka masterfully combines within one framework the knowable and mysterious, an exact portrayal of the factual world with a dreamlike and magical dissolution of it. By unifying those contrary elements he was able to achieve some new fusion style in prose fiction. The analysis of one of his works will allow seeing in what way Kafka attains that profound quality of his expression of the experience of human loss, estrangement, and guilt – an experience increasingly dominant in the modern age.Kafka's best-known story The Metamorphosis is the demonstrative example of Kafkaesque paradox which consists in clashing the realism of commonplace detail with not just improbable but absurd turns of events. The inner world of Kafka’s character seeps from imaginable to actual, Gregor Samsa in The Metamorphosis transmews into an insect as the only way to manifest his insect-like relationship to the world, where he lives. It is no dream. The Metamorphosis is peculiar as a narrative in having its climax in the very first sentence: â€Å"As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.† (Kafka, 19) The rest of the story falls away from this high point of astonishment in one long expiring sigh. This form of narrative, which contradicts all conventional concepts of presenting the discourse, violates the rules just the same as the people’s faith in particular ancient beliefs had been violated in the twentieth century. As it is known, the traditional na rrative bases on the drama of dà ©nouement, the so-called solution of complications and the coming to a conclusion. For Kafka such form is not acceptable because it is just exactly the absence of dà ©nouement and conclusions that is his subject matter. His story is about death, but death that is without dà ©nouement, death that is merely a spiritually petering out. The first sentence of The Metamorphosis announces Gregor Samsa’s death and the rest of the story is his slow dying. However, in no case Kafka’s protagonist is going to give up meekly. He struggles against the reality of life which, actually turned out to be a death for him; in his case, it follows, his life is his death and there is no escape. For a moment, it is true, near the end of his long dying, while listening to his sister play the violin, he feels â€Å"as if the way were opening before him to the unknown nourishment he craved† (Kafka, 76); but the nourishment remains unknown, he is locked i nto his room for the last time and he expires. What Gregor awakens to on the morning of his metamorphosis is the truth of his life. His ordinary consciousness has lied to him about himself; now he is confronted with the transference from his habitual self-understanding into the nightmare of truth. That dreadful dream, which he got into, reveals, in fact, reality, which he could not have understood before – he is a vermin, a disgusting creature shut out from â€Å"the human circle.† (Kafka, 33) At this point it should be underlined that Kafka prefers to use a metaphor, so that Gregor Samsa is not like a vermin but he is vermin. Anything less than metaphor, such as a simile comparing Gregor to vermin, would diminish the reality of what Kafka is trying to represent. Gregor appears in a dream and it is only natural that a dreamer, while dreaming, takes his dream for reality. However, his metamorphosis is indeed no dream but a revelation of the truth. And this truth is compo sed of an array of facts.First of all he grasps the deteriorative effect of his job upon his soul, the job that materially supports him but cuts him off from the possibility of real human associations:Oh God, he thought, what an exhausting job I've picked on! Traveling about day in, day out. It's much more irritating work than doing the actual business in the office, and on top of that there's the trouble of constant traveling, of worrying about train connections, the bad and irregular meals, the human associations that are no sooner struck up than they are ended without ever becoming intimate. The devil take it all! (Kafka, 20)He has been sacrificing himself by working at his meaningless, degrading job so as to pay off an old debt of his parents’ to his employer. Otherwise â€Å"I'd have given notice long ago, I'd have gone to the chief and told him exactly what I think of him.† (Kafka, 21) But even now, with the truth of his self-betrayal pinning him on his back to h is bed, he is unable to claim himself for himself and decide to quit—he must wait â€Å"another five or six years†:Once I’ve saved enough money to pay back my parents' debts to him—that should take another five or six years—I’ll do it without fail. I’ll cut myself completely loose then. For the moment, though, I'd better get up, since my train goes at five. (Kafka, 21)Another truth revealed through metamorphosis is the situation in the Samsa family: on the surface, the official sentiments of the parents and the sister toward Gregor, and of Gregor toward them and toward himself; underneath, the horror and disgust, and self-disgust: â€Å"†¦ family duty required the suppression of disgust and the exercise of patience, nothing but patience.† (Kafka, 65) His metamorphosis is a judgment on himself from the standpoint of his defeated humanity. Philip Rahv has very suggestively analyzed the subjective meaning of the insect symbol here by showing that quite frequently brothers and sisters are symbolically represented in dreams as animals or insects and that, since in this story of family life one of the underlying themes is the displacement of Samsa in the family hierarchy by his sister, it should, on the psychological plane, be looked upon as, on Kafka’s part, a construct of wish and guilt thoughts. (Rahv, pp. 61-62)Gregor breaks out of his room the first time hoping that his transformation will turn out to be â€Å"nonsense†; the second time, in the course of defending at least his hope of returning to his â€Å"human past.† His third eruption, in Part III, has quite a different aim. The final section of the story discovers a Gregor who tries to dream again, after a long interval, of resuming his old place at the head of the family, but the figures from the past that now appear to him—his boss, the chief clerk, traveling salesmen, a chambermaid (â€Å"a sweet and fleeting memor y†), and so on—cannot help him, â€Å"they were one and all unapproachable and he was glad when they vanished.† (Kafka, 69) Defeated, he finally gives up all hope of returning to the human community. Now his existence slopes steeply toward death. His room is now the place in which all the household’s dirty old decayed things are thrown, along with Gregor, a dirty old decayed thing; and he has just stopped eating. At first he had thought he was unable to eat out of â€Å"chagrin over the state of his room† (72).   But then he discovered that he got â€Å"increasing enjoyment† from crawling about the filth and junk. On the last evening of his life, watching from his room the lodgers whom his family have taken in putting away a good supper, he comes to a crucial realization: â€Å"I’m hungry enough,† said Gregor sadly to himself, â€Å"but not for that kind of food. How these lodgers are stuffing themselves, and here am I dying o f starvation!†(Kafka, 74) In giving up at last all hope of reentering the human circle, Gregor finally understands the truth about his life; which is to say he accepts the knowledge of his death, for the truth about his life is his death-in-life by his banishment from the human community. But having finally accepted the truth, he begins to sense a possibility that exists for him only in his outcast state. He is hungry enough, he realizes, but not for the world’s stuff, â€Å"not for that kind of food.† (Kafka, 74)When Gregor breaks out of his room the third and last time, he is no longer trying to deceive himself about himself and get back to his old life with its illusions about belonging to the human community. What draws him out of his room the last night of his life is his sister’s violin playing. Although he had never cared for music in his human state, now the notes of the violin attract him surprisingly. Indifferent to the others, at last he has the courage to think about himself. The filthy starving underground creature advances onto â€Å"the spotless floor of the living room† where his sister is playing for the three lodgers. Here Kafka makes use of the idea that music expresses the inexpressible, that it points to a hidden sphere of spiritual power and meaning.Creating in The Metamorphosis a character who is real and unreal, replete with meaning and empty of self, Kafka encourages his readers to fill in the void that exists at the center of the insect-Gregor's self. Thus, as a reader, one can come to conclusion that Gregor’s metamorphosis is a symbol of his alienation from the human state, of his â€Å"awakening† to the full horror of his dull, spiritless existence, and of the desperate self-disgust of his unconscious life.Reference:Kafka, Franz (1952) Selected Short Stories of Franz Kafka. Analysis Of Simone De Beauvoir s The Second Sex

The first text we explore in this step is Bonaventure’s â€Å"On Seeing God in his Image†. Bonaventure shows us that through inward reflection we can see God. God can then lead us to God’s two most important laws, and the best ways for us to live in community with others; by loving God, and our neighbors. The next text is from the 2nd Vatican Council called â€Å"Pastoral Constitution,† which focused on bringing the church into modern times. This text focuses on the importance of helping those being marginalized, those who are on the brink of society, and what is the best way that the Church as a community can fight to protect them. The following text comes from Simone de Beauvoir called â€Å"The Second Sex,† which discusses the ideas of the feminist†¦show more content†¦One major link includes the fight between an oppressed group and their persecutors. Whether it’s the proletariat and the bourgeois in â€Å"The Communist Manifesto,† or the inequality of genders in â€Å"The Second Sex,† or the flight of the African Americans in the â€Å"Letter from Birmingham Jail†. In all of these texts we are shown how easy it is for one group to abuse their power and create unfair rules and regulations only imposed on the more inferior members of society. Each group of oppressor thrives off of alienating, and subjugating their inferiors. So it seems the theme of solidarity is the only way to combat this linkage of oppression. In all of the texts we are shown that through solidarity comes freedom. We see in Bonaventure, and Vatican Council II that all God wants for God’s people is inclusion, and to fight for the rights of the â€Å"others† of the world. In the more secular texts from King, de Beauvoir, and Marx and Engels, we see the same ideas. The only way to fight prejudice is to unite the people of either side of the problem, and have them work together to make the whole of society a more inclusive place. By uniting together to fight oppression we overcome the trivialities that separate seemingly opposing groups. The next theme contingent throughout the step is the benefits of community. This is similar to the inclusiveness that comes from solidarity, but through community we can prevent oppression from happeningShow MoreRelatedThe Second Sex By Simone De Beauvoir888 Words   |  4 Pages In 1949, Simone de Beauvoir commenced the development of second-wave feminism.
